This course will focus on principles of Universal Design for Learning: a powerful framework to help students with learning challenges participate and succeed in the school curriculum.
“Universal Design for Learning is a set of principles for curriculum development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn. UDL provides a blueprint for creating instructional goals, methods, materials, and assessments that work for everyone--not a single, one-size-fits-all solution but rather flexible approaches that can be customized and adjusted for individual needs” (CAST, 2011).
We will learn about and apply UDL principles in this class, primarily through instructional and assistive technology.
Assistive technology includes any technology system or device that can improve educational outcomes for students with disabilities. Assistive technology includes both low tech and high tech—from pencil grips to sophisticated literacy software--and we will talk about a continuum of technology options in this course.
Our class meets, as a whole group, on Tuesday evenings. Each of you is expected to attend the whole class session (or, as MSU calls it, Lecture/Recitation/Discussion Section) each week. At the whole class session, we will introduce the week’s topic, review some general ideas and principles related to that topic, and then give directions for the week’s lab session. In your lab session, you’ll complete hands-on activities, facilitated by an instructor, in which you’ll apply the concepts that were introduced and discussed during the whole-class session.
